Las Cobras – Selva

So the other day when I went to the Cardinal Fuzz page looking for an album, I should actually have gone to Fuzz Club Records. Are they by any chance related? I think we should be told. After all, they’ve never been seen in the same photo together.

It says ‘London,’ only ‘London’ on the bandcamp page. I can be amongst the more stupid members of our race sometimes, but I strongly suspect Las Cobras don’t originate from London. I bet that’s actually Fuzz Club Records HQ. A quick and dirty net search suggests Uruguay, marking them as the first Uruguayans (to my knowledge) to land in this parish.

It sometimes puts me in mind of 80s stuff like Jesus & Mary Chain, that kind of genre, a name I do not know and do not care to. There’s been a through line of that thing all the way up to the present day so this isn’t a throwback, I’m just feeling too stupid to think of any other examples at the moment. Some of the tunes are proper good, though, and as an album it is an excellent thing to listen to.

The Dedbeats

So I normally do albums only. I’m making an exception for the Dedbeats because
a) I’m biased,
b) I can
and c) I want to.

Singer Rhett runs the open mic down at The Soundhouse on a Tuesday night, a place where I’ve been made to feel most welcome when I’ve gone down. The Dedbeats remind me most of all of an obscure Leicester band from 1991 called Dead End Street, only with more talent and an ability to take the stage (slightly) less wasted. As Ray Davies is Rhetts favourite songwriter, that’s quite apt.

Also, we all love Crazyhead.

True Widow – Avvolgere

The academy shut its doors. It was planning an expansion, a growth. It invited in a designer – the designer was a God. He rejected the blueprints – it was the wrong colour, he wanted a whitewash. Seems there were hankerings for a public enquiry, reckoned he’d been less than transparent with His creation. Well, said the academy, You’ve got an obvious chip on Your shoulder and thus decided on a different designer – one with a decent pen.

Were you there when Zeus started getting fresh with Aphrodite? God on God action! You’ve never seen anything like it! She wouldn’t go near him!

Let’s go to that fucking place.

Celebrity shock: Page 1 pinup admits to having ‘camera sex’ with cardigan expert. Welcome to life in the Empire of Temptation – the only way to expand! And while we’re on the subject – it’s not very comfortable.

I’m anti-modern – I’m shocked by everything and nothing. At the same time.

Tribe – Abort

One of those albums I’ve listened to lately that I mentioned in passing. This is one of those bands from my youth that I neglected to mention in that mixpost I did about being 20, though I think I actually discovered them aged 21 anyway. This album has some genuinely great tunes on it. There have always been great artists that have gone unheralded in their time. This is why we have memories (and recordings…)

This was called ‘alternative rock’ back in the day, a stupid genre name which I’m using even though if this exact album was released today I very much doubt they’d put that tag on it because of its vacuous meaninglessness. Maybe they’d call it psych-rock which is fast heading in the same direction! It’s easy for me to scoff cos I didn’t do it (to paraphrase Chick Hicks), but I can’t think of a label hence why I’ve gone with the lazy one with added snark. The snark is probably to hide the fact that I myself haven’t got a name for the nameless.

There’s a Phd in that for someone who can be arsed to do it.
