Oneida – Success

Whereby ‘Success’ is defined as doing what you do really, really well. By me, at least. And this album lives up to the title.

My love for Oneida – which I still don’t know how you pronounce – is a long-lasting one. One of my very favourite pieces of music ever is ‘Sheets of Easter.’ One of my very favourite albums ever made is ‘Rated O.’ These boys have form, and here do they bring it.

Stylistically, this is more like their early, garagey stuff, kind of a return to earth from their incredibly out-there explorations in the post ‘Rated O’ era.

The Cult of Dom Keller – Goodbye To The Light

Another band what has been busy, I swear I’ve had several notifications of new release by these, all with different titles. Or it may be that people I follow have bought their stuff of late, and I’m mixing that up with actual new releases. But I’m waaay behind on catching up with stuff anyway. Been busy with my own thang again, which has grown into a many tentacled beast of a project which doesn’t even promise a(nother) new album this year. Though you may get one anyway. Depends how I feel.

If you know TCODK then you know what to expect. If you don’t, then they’re kind of gothy garage psych which are three words I literally just made up because no-one else has ever used them before. Don’t mention it. They do delve into more ambientish themes, though, which I believe represents a new element to their approach.

Anyway, my rubbishness at descriptions aside, there’s some right belters on this.

Also, they have this new thing due.

The Prefab Messiahs – Psychsploitation Today

And all the kings horses and all the kings men
insisted there was nothing wrong
the reports were inaccurate at best
Humpty remains a potent national symbol
and although they did take time to remind us
it was not time to renounce timidity
danger is still at large!
Humpty is still safe but only because of our eternal vigilance
and because our leaders were brave
brave enough to keep secrets
brave enough to keep us indoors

So, you were in the mind of God? Did you actually talk to the Big G?

Well, She popped in for a bit while we were there, before the main tour, but there were quite a few of us and, whilst She looked at all of us and would therefore have Known Us, She didn’t speak to me directly or anything, just addressed us as a whole…

And what did G say?

Well, nothing specific. Just, you know, that we all have many gifts and faculties and to make sure we use them all at their proper time and use them naturally but She didn’t specify what counts as ‘natural.’ But, yeah, as a spiritual experience, it was one worth doing. I’m glad I experienced that. Well worth the travel and accommodation costs. I gave it good feedback on the customer survey.
