Smote – Genog

What even is a Genog?

Well, duh, Mr supposedly university-educated Flipdog, it’s the name of the new album by Smote. What else need it be?

I have an earlier one of theirs also on my wishlist. Maybe I should buy one of them, they is clearly amongst the Gods of music. Said wishlist has gone beyond the realms of ridiculous into new levels though.

SO yet another collection of music where there are no words – I mean that descriptively not in the instrumental sense. There are words, and they are chanted, in amanner that puts me in mind of the wonderful Crow Tongue album, Ghost Eye Seeker.

Trancey, meditative with a definite sense of journey. One with a heavy end.

AHRKH – Beams From a Spiritual Panorama

So my epic wishlist on Bandcamp has exploded since I re-discovered online radio late last year, but every now and again I need to remind myself of the stuff that’s been on there for absolutely ages.

So I was listening to the radio show that Golden Ratio Frequencies do, and it wasn’t doing a lot for me. It was full of the more new-age-bromide-y ambient music that I ultimately find a bit cloying. So I went to the aforementioned wishlist and scrolled right down to look for stuff that had been there ages and that I couldn’t really remember what it was, and I saw this, so I clicked on it and pressed play.

And got turned into a monged out vegetable. This is a very powerful piece of immersive and rather intense drone. I love it.

And then I noticed this was on the Golden Ratio Frequencies label, and I suspect is the man who does Golden Ratio Frequencies himself, who also is part of the Gnod family. They get everywhere!

Funny how circles close sometimes.

Paisiel – Unconscious Death Wishes

Whims, eh? There’s actually a fair bit I’ve discovered lately, but I’m on the wrong PC and have bad memory. Otherwise I suspect I’d bombard you with another buses series.

How often do I need to post the work of Julius Gabriel? Probably as often as he does it. Dude is properly on it. So is his partner in this maelstrom, João Pais Filipe, who you will also hear in the next post, equally maelstromic. Neologisms, eh? I love ’em. This is the musical equivalent.

This be the second Paisiel album, so I hope it means there will be more.

Tengger – Spiritual 2

I had a thought nag me that I’d posted their first album, and indeed I had.

This one is nice and mellow, and was a perfect one to start the day whilst my brain still tries to remember what I do for a living. I’ve allowed my schedule to become such that the alarm goes off at 8.15 and I stumble downstairs, turn the pc on, make a coffee, begin work. I must admit I do miss the walk in in the morning, but I don’t miss getting up at 7ish.

Now then, you know the sign of really, really good artists? They can release more than one really, really good album in a year.

Just saying.

Did you know ‘Sesquipedalian’ basically means really long word? I love that the English language contains this sort of nonsense!

Here’s an interesting post, not at all related to music, but very much related to living well.

FiRES WERE SHOT – Fallen

Shouty caps lock is, unfortunately, intentional.

I’ve listened to a lot of drone over the years, some would say especially when I’m talking (boom! boom!); I would say especially when most males talk, we do love to hear the sound of our own opinions even though they are almost all bollocks, yes, even yours. Especially yours.

Joking aside, actually I wasn’t joking. I’m famous for not having a sense of humour. Well, not famous as such, I mean, I’m clearly not a famous person, but one of my personality traits that is remarked upon often is my utter lack of a sense of humour. I often ask my son what one is because he has one, apparently. Like most communications between the generations, however, this often results in misunderstanding as I’m never entirely sure what he’s trying to tell me.

I had intended to talk, well, write, well, type about drone music but I got distracted because that’s what happens when you let flow happen. The same thing happens when I pick up a pen.

But if you think about it, drone is all about flow.

Life contains an inherent unpredictability field, one of the most vital building blocks if I may be forgiven that clumsy analogy, although all the blocks are vitally important for Gestaltic reasons. But this Unpredictability Field is often – nay, always – overlooked. This is where the creative spirit comes from, those who seem more creative have a stronger manifestation of this field. One effect of this is that being with them makes life more unpredictable! Obviously.  An example here is weather forecasts. Somebody with a strong field will believe that weather forecasters are charlatans because all the predictions seem to be little better than chance added to easily observable patterns that anybody coulld work out given two functioning eyes.

An important distinction must be made here: unpredictability is not the same thing as randomness.

This is why attempts to build life are going so badly; those attempting to build are not accounting for unpredictability as it cannot be reduced to a detailed description. It has no atoms or its equivalents.
