Edward Ka-Spel – The Moon Cracked Over Albion

ka-spel

I knew of the Legendary Pink Dots. Who doesn’t? But only a bit of their work, and that from the 70s.

Nonetheless, this came right as a surprise. I’d recently had recommended an album made by someone who was knocking around in the 60s doing a new thing with some ‘cool’ luminaries helping him, and it did nothing for me at all. Felt like it was living in the past. So I initially was a bit worried that this might be similar.

Didn’t take long at all to kick that notion into touch. This is something that encapsulates probably every style the guy has done over the years and then some, gloriously wrapped up in a whole dose of now. Impossible to describe, even more so than the usual things that are impossible to describe. Which isn’t a description.

I think I need to investigate more of his work.

Tengger – Spiritual 2

I had a thought nag me that I’d posted their first album, and indeed I had.

This one is nice and mellow, and was a perfect one to start the day whilst my brain still tries to remember what I do for a living. I’ve allowed my schedule to become such that the alarm goes off at 8.15 and I stumble downstairs, turn the pc on, make a coffee, begin work. I must admit I do miss the walk in in the morning, but I don’t miss getting up at 7ish.

Cowboy Flying Saucer – Travel Lodge

So as I work form home with now occasional trips into the main campus to get us ready for a bit of return, I’ve been going through my inbox’s many, many emails from Bandcamp telling me what people have bought who I follow. I click on those that catch my eye. And the hit rate has been surprisingly low, so much so that I’ve unfollowed a couple, and more may follow.

But then the last couple of days has suddenly given me some interesting stuff. This one is a bit like The Fall, with hints of Campag Velocet.

Sunburned Hand of the Man – Jaybird

I only have one complaint about this album. Some of the grooves just stop, like someone simply pressed ‘stop’ on the tape recorder. I can just hear them say, what, you got 16 minutes and 58 seconds (for example) of a most righteous groove! What more could you possibly want? Well, another 16 minutes and 58 seconds would be nice…

Its a live recording, so the awesome bass playing isn’t as prominent as it should be. But thats a trade-off, I bet if they went into the studio proper for this it would never turn out like this. It might be just as good, but it wouldn’t be like this. And I must admit, I like this. Much.

Saintseneca – Pillar of Na

I’m absolutely rubbish at tags, largely because I’m rubbish at genres. Intentionally so, as I was once quite good at them, but age made me believe they didn’t matter and I found them easier to give up than opinions.

This is ironic as my work wants me to investigate linked data from the point of view of making our catalogue records richer and to ease resource discovery. Now, admittedly, that ain’t music, and a lot of the data being linked will be more to do with authors and their previous works, affiliations, etc, although subject headings may very well match loosely to genre in the academic output landscape, and our reliance on the always behind the times Library of Congress subject headings can be somewhat of a hindrance here. Ho hum. Bet you actually wanted to know about this music?

This music be music, and gloriously so.

I can’t work out if its a lone wolf who has many helpers or whether its actually a band who just use the main dude on their artist pic. The website doesn’t have an ‘about’ section. But that is as relevant as you want it to be, as indeed, are all things.
